  9. Printer's Apprentice 7.16 - 3/23/2001
  10. - Eliminated the need for comdlg32.ocx. This shaves about 140k off
  11. the installed footprint of the app. However, this lead to one problem.
  12. The File|Printer Setup dialog was generated with assistance from
  13. comdlg32.ocx. I could not get my API based Printer Setup dialog working
  14. reliably. So, for the time being, the File|Printer Setup menu item
  15. has been removed.
  16.  
  17. The work-around is to simply use the Windows Control Panel to setup
  18. your printer before you use Printer's Apprentice.
  19.  
  20. In the interest of shipping a leaner (code-wise) product, I think
  21. the removal of the Printer Setup menu item is justified.
  22.  
  23. - Fixed a flaw in the watermark that prints on pages when the
  24. software is in unregistered mode.
  25.  
  26. - Fixed a few display buggies in the main window status bar. Sometimes
  27. the status bar would display "1 font selected" even if there were no
  28. fonts displayed.

  32. - Previous versions required that a printer be installed in order to
  33. use the software. THis restriction has been removed.

  35. - If you don't have a printer installed, PA gently reminds you of this

  39. Printer's Apprentice 7.14 - 03/07/2001 
  40. - Added a status bar at the bottom that shows the number of fonts
  41. in a list and the number of fonts selected.

  43. - Other minor cosmetic fixes have been applied. Some 3D effects on the main
  44. window have been removed, the sizer bar between the Installed List
  45. and font window is wider, etc.

  62. 2000 have native Type 1 support built in, but the ATM icon was

  66. sorted by font name.

  68. - The "Print All Fonts In Path"/"Print Font Groups" dialog is now 
  69. modal. It also displays the correct number of fonts to be printed.

  87. - This version has been rebuilt with Visual Studio Service Pack 4.

  89. - Fixed a problem with multiple select and drag operations in the fonts 
  90.   listboxes on the main screen. It was often difficult to select multiple 
  91.   fonts then drag them to Font Groups or another folder.

  93. - Adobe Type 1 fonts under Windows 2000 are now recognized.

  95. - On the Font Information tab, the software now displays a red Adobe icon
  96.   if a Type 1 font is selected.

  136. - As you can see, we are always trying to improve the software.
  137.   There are lots of issues addressed with this release.

  139. - New Feature - Added links to our new web-based technical support request and
  140.   Frequently Asked Questions pages on the Web.

  142. - New Feature - Added small ANSI numbers to the character set display
  143.   on the main window.
  144.  
  145. - New Feature - Added additional fields to the TrueType Information tab. It now
  146.   displays font author, company and description in addition to the
  147.   fields that were already there. Also, data no longer displays
  148.   random question marks.

  150. - New Feature - Added a new Font Information sample sheet. This prints the
  151.   data embedded in a TTF file and displayed on the TrueType
  152.   Information tab.

  154. - New Feature - New in Options dialog box - You can now select the color

  158. - New Feature - The "Font Registry" dialog, has some new features -

  160.   If a Registry entry points to a file that no longer exists,
  161.   the software displays a small red symbol next to the name.

  163.   The Repair button lets you select a TrueType font file to
  164.   associate with a broken Registry link.

  166.   The Delete button removes the invalid Registry entry.

  168. - New Feature - Added toolbar icons for the Font Registry tool and

  171. - New Feature - Added sound effects when you click a column header to sort it.

  173. - Enhancement - This version no longer requires the THREED.OCX file. 
  174.   If you have it in your system folder and you know that no other apps 
  175.   use it, you can delete it.

  177. - Enhancement - Added better support for UNC naming conventions. 
  178.   It is now possible to use a Microsoft-style share on a network 
  179.   as the font groups folder. You could setup a share, 
  180.   \\machine\fontgroups for example, and then set the font groups 
  181.   folder to point to that share in the Options dialog. Make sure 
  182.   this share has full read/write access for anyone who will be 
  183.   connecting to it.
  184.  
  185. - Enhancement - Changed the wording on the splash screen. It originally read
  186.   "Reading xx fonts from your system." It now reads "Reading xx
  187.   font families from your system."
  188.  
  189.   The original wording was causing confusion. When loading, PA is
  190.   actually reading the font families (i.e. Arial), not individual
  191.   fonts (i.e. Arial Bold).
  192.  
  193. - Bug Fix - PA would crash if "Arial" was not installed on the system. This
  194.   font was used for the small title bars in the app. This application
  195.   now uses a system API call to determine the font used for small
  196.   palette windows.
  197.  
  198. - Bug fix: If you used Shift-Click to select multiple installed
  199.   fonts and dragged them to a group, without releasing the shift
  200.   key, the main window would no longer draw the selected font.
  201.   This has been fixed. Thanks to TN for bringing this to our
  202.   attention.
  203.  
  204. - Bug Fix: On some systems with many, many drives, Printer's Apprentice
  205.   would not recognize the some of the drives.  Thanks to Raymond_SF
  206.   for bringing this to our attention.
  207.  
  208. - Bug Fix: Added improved refresh code for the drives on the Uninstalled tab.
  209.   When a floppy/cd-rom/zip drive is changed, the list of folders for
  210.   the drive is now refreshed. Thanks to SB for pointing this out.

  212. - Bug Fix - Enlarged the size of the Uninstall dialog box. The original
  213.   size was clipping off some lines of text.

  215. - Bug Fix - Minor speed improvements in paint speed when resizing
  216.   the main window.

  218. - Bug fix - it is now easier to "grab" and resize the window
  219.   containing the installed/uninstalled/both lists.

  221. - Bug fix - if you had the debugging option enabled, then 
  222.   edited the notes for a font group, Printer's Apprentice
  223.   would crash on exit. This has been fixed.

  225. - Bug fix - if you tried to delete an empty font group that
  226.   had notes attached to it, the software would let you know
  227.   the folder was not empty, even though it looked like there
  228.   were no fonts in it. Under the hood, the notes are stored
  229.   in a notes.txt file. I added code to automatically delete 
  230.   the notes file if it exists, then the font group folder will
  231.   be sucessfully deleted.

  233. - Bug fix - sometimes FOT files would not get deleted when
  234.   uninstalling fonts. This has been fixed.

  236. Printer's Apprentice 7.11 - 7/6/99
  237. - Component Checker dialog now has links to online FAQ for help
  238.   with debugging OCX/DLL conflicts. OCX/DLL conflict report also
  239.   has improved step-by-step help for fixing problems.

  241. - Fixed a bug in drag & drop code that produced GPFs. GPFs would
  242.   occur when dragging files to an empty directory or group.
  243.  
  244. - The ESC key now closes the Font Registry dialog box. The button
  245.   order on this dialog has also changed per standard Windows 
  246.   conventions.

  248. - New PAURL.INI file. This file contains a list of font related
  249.   and Windows shareware links. To access this list, start
  250.   Printer's Apprentice and select "Fonts on the Web" from the

  254. - Recompiled with lastest Microsoft DLL/OCX files included in

  264. Printer's Apprentice 7.09 - 5/5/99
  265. - ATM 4.0 FOR WINDOWS NT Support!
  266.   Printer's Apprentice now has preliminary support for Postscript Type 1
  267.   font installed with Adobe Type Manager 4.0 for Windows NT. This has
  268.   only been tested with the base fonts that ship with ATM. There may 
  269.   be some Type 1 fonts under NT that Printer's Apprentice has a problem
  270.   with. If you run into problems, please let me know.
  271.  
  272.   Note that Printer's Apprentice cannot read _uninstalled_ Type 1 fonts
  273.   on either NT or 95/98. Type 1 fonts must be installed with ATM to be
  274.   viewed or printed.

  276. - Fixed a problem with PA sometimes not correctly uninstalling a font when
  277.   the "Delete Font File" option was selected.

  279. - Fixed a problem with FOT files. If a TTF file is installed via a reference
  280.   to an FOT file in the Registry, PA was not always succesful in actually
  281.   uninstalling the font. Often the font file would be moved/copied, but the
  282.   font entry would remain in memory.

  284. - When browsing uninstalled font folders, the arrow indicating sort order
  285.   now displays properly.

  306.   a directory with an existing registered version, you don't need

  310. - Fixed an that sometimes prevented fonts being moved correctly from 
  311.   font group to other folders.

  313. - The catalog and sample sheet settings on the Print dialog are now 
  314.   saved when you close the dialog and restored when you open it.

  316. - Fixed a bug that prevented the Two Column catalog from printing
  317.   correctly. It would print one column on the first page and then

  324. - Fixed an "Error #91 - Object or variable not set" bug that occured when 
  325.   selecting multiple fonts while the Character Set view is displayed.

  327. - Fixed some code that prevented certain installed fonts from being displayed.

  329. - The ANSI Chart and Character Set printouts now obey the Details settings on 
  330.   the Sample Sheets tab of the Options dialog.

  351. - New Feature * You can now double click on a font in the installed, 
  352.   uninstalled or font group list and the program associated with TTF files
  353.   will be lauched. Normally this is the fontview.exe program that ships
  354.   with Windows. Thanks to AS for this suggestion.

  356. - Fixed a GPF or "This item's control has been deleted" error that would
  357.   occur if you used the keyboard to traverse the directory in the 
  358.   uninstalled list quickly.

  360. - Fixed a typo in the "Bar Divided Catalog." One of the text strings was
  361.   coming out on the page as "012345656789" with the 5 and 6 repeated. Thanks
  362.   to LM for finding this.

  364. - Fixed a GPF/"Object Variable Not Set" that occured when dragging installed fonts
  365.   to a directory. This typically happened when dragging to the root of a drive.

  367. - Fixed a GPF/"Subscript Out of Bounds" error that could occur when dragging fonts
  368.   from the installed list to a group. This usually happened when dragging to a group
  369.   that is not the currently selected group.

  373. - Fixed a "Path/File Access" error. This occured if you select an installed
  374.   font that physically resides in font group and dragged it back to the
  375.   same font group.

  377.   This bug also occured when an installed font that physically resides in a
  378.   folder and is dragged from the installed font list to that same folder.

  380.   This nasty little bug could hang the computer, GPF or display the "Path/File

  383. - Fixed a bug that created many, many zero byte .TMP files in your

  491. - Fixed a problem with GradientTitle.OCX. Even though the software
  492.   no longer uses it, our component checking tool was still looking
  493.   for it. This resulted in a dialog box being displayed each time
  494.   the software was launched.

  767.  - Fixed "Divide by Zero" error that occured when trying to install
  768.    just one TrueType font.

  770.  - Placed error checking code in effort to fix "Overflow" errors some
  771.    users encountered at startup.

  803.      to the main PA window, those fonts would not be displayed or
  804.      available in PA or other Windows apps. (In other words,

  807.    - When reading a directory or changing a directory, the full 
  808.      status message above the progress bar was not being displayed.

  810.    - Several users noted that it can take a few moments to 
  811.      close this window and return to the main PA window. We have 
  812.      tried to tweak this routine and added a "Cleaning up..." 
  813.      message to the Install/Print window.

  815.    - Fixed a bug in the Filter drop down listbox. If you had the 
  816.      directory filtered, then printed a catalog or sample sheets,
  817.      then click the << Previous buttons to go back and change
  818.      your filter, the filter would no longer work. Each time the 
  819.      filter is changed, it resulted in a "No font files" list.
